Today is International Women’s Day and our guest, Antoinette Van Sluytman, shares her mission to empower women in the creative industry. We discuss the power that smartphone cameras give everyone to share their own stories through film.
I met Antoinette in San Diego’s Black Com!x Day 2022 in February. Antoinette was part of a panel called, “Black Women in Comics and Publishing” and she discussed the challenges or being a woman of color in the industry.
Antoinette and her sister Rose are the owners of Broken Chalice Studios in San Diego. Antoinette is an artist, writer and graphic designer. Their multimedia company plans to expand into the film industry.
In this episode, Antoinette and I discuss the power of storytelling to give a voice for black and brown women to bring representation to the multimedia industry, particularly through their company. We share the accessibility of mobile filmmaking and how that can help realize their mission.
What we discuss:
The lack of women representation in the creative industry
Why it’s important that women tell their own stories
How narratives become immortal
The accessibility of smartphone cameras
...and much more.
