The Human Smartphone Storyteller with CK Goldiing Episode 44
Wednesday Dec 12, 2018
Wednesday Dec 12, 2018
When you are going about your day you are experiencing moments. You can connect your moments with your thoughts and create stories you share all the time. One storyteller, accidentally turned one of his videos into a film. In Episode 44 of the SBP Podcast, CK Goldiing shares the story that has inspired captivated the attention of people around the world with its emotional draw. 61 Hugs was a challenge that has made touched many people and brought smiles and shines the light on human kindness in a very simple way.
An in-depth discussion about how we can all turn our phones to capture every day moments that tell wonderful stories which connect us as human beings. No special gear needed. All you need is an open mind, perhaps a little challenge and a sprinkle of curiosity as you turn the lens on yourself and the people around you. Through kindness, respect and a bit of humor, complete strangers will gladly let down their guards and go as far as to give a random stranger a hug.
Listen to CK share his experiences and what the outcome of his film, 61 Hugs has brought to people who watch it and to his understanding of people and storytelling.
“Crippled by a lifetime of overthinking, CK is a typical artist - forever worried about rejection, people’s perceptions and how things look. One day, he is challenged to leave his house, walk the busy streets, and ask sixty-one strangers for a hug. Although terrified by the inevitable rejections ahead, CK accepts, clinging to his long-standing belief that ‘overthinking is the enemy of remarkable’. Filmed in one take using actual footage from the challenge, ’61 Hugs’ demonstrates the remarkable power of optimism, heart, goodwill, human spirit, spontaneity and the universe.” — 61 Hugs

The iPhone is Your Recording Studio with Graham Cochrane Episode 42
Wednesday Nov 07, 2018
Wednesday Nov 07, 2018
What you may have heard about the quality of audio for your film is probably correct: It needs to rock! Our guest in Episode 42 is Graham Cochrane, the founder of The Recording Revolution. He is showing people how to rock creating music that sounds awesome with no expensive equipment. He proved it using his iPhone and GarageBand and is going to share how you can do it too. On his website, Grahams says,“my passion is to educate and empower a new generation of musicians and songwriters to make outstanding music with their home studio.”
Is it possible to get professional sounding recordings/mixes with home studio gear? Graham says, “Yes!” and his program teaches and guides you through the process of doing that. But when he was challenged to do it with his iPhone, he proved that you can even create great audio using your iPhone and the free app GarageBand by Apple. You may think he used an external microphone to record the vocals for his song, but he only used the built in microphone on the phone.
Listen to Graham share how he did it in the podcast now or download it to listen to it offline while you drive or whenever you want.
Graham shares a lot of great insight on things to know before you record and he even shares tips on how to get ready to record your music so your results sound professional.
You may have shot your film already. You may be editing your film right now and wondering about how to improve it with some good music but the legal process can be intimating. You have choices by creating your own music using Graham’s program, his tips and advice. Perhaps you can play guitar and sing but to get a recording studio to record you and mix other instruments can be costly. In this podcast, you will learn how to use your iPhone to get that song into your film!

We talk about storytelling a lot as part of this podcast when we talk about filmmaking. Our guest explains how experimental filmmaking with smartphones, taking advantage of the visual challenges of pixels fits into the storytelling discussion. Max Schleser has been working in the mobile filmmaking space as a filmmaker since 2006. Let’s take a trip through the history of smartphone filmmaking from his perspective.
Episode 41 of the SBP Podcast: The voice of mobile film™ is an in-depth discussion with an old friend and mobile film pioneer, Max Schleser. We met Max in 2011 and due to our passion for the mobile film industry, we have succeeded in hosting a film festival for mobile filmmakers every year as a live venue where filmmakers can attend and grow the community. Our conversation takes us into the history of experimenting with mobile phone cameras to the experimental artistic opportunities of smartphone cameras today with VR and 360 video.
Listen to a unique conversation with Max to get a first-hand insight into the world of mobile storytelling through experimental and innovative mobile camera technology.
Max is the cofounder of the Mobile Innovation Network about to hold it’s 8th International Mobile Innovation Screening at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia on November 16. “MINA creates interactions between communities, content and the creative industries.”
Max explores innovative mobile tools to create visual mobile storytelling through creativity. Max also holds workshops to teach VR (virtual reality) 360 and 3D video.
His first mobile film, Max with a Kaitei was filmed in Japan, circa 2006 and used an early cell phone camera.

iPhone Filmmaker Inspires All Ages to Make Movies Episode 40
Tuesday Oct 02, 2018
Tuesday Oct 02, 2018
Imagine that you have made over one hundred films in your lifetime, because who keeps count over a hundred, and you are now working on your third film shot with your iPhone. Meet Mickey Harrison: 83 years and still making movies!
Episode 40 of the SBP Podcast: The Voice of Mobile Film™ introduces you to a filmmaker who has spent over 32 years making films. Her film crews came on set with all the big gear and equipment and cameras you find in a typical film set. She has mentored students from High School to Universities who have become successful participants in the film industry from New York to LA. Imagine that you get to have a lifetime experience working in the industry and attending film festivals and then are told that making movies with smartphones is a thing you can do and so, you do. You just do it.
Mickey grew up in New York and her Uncle and Father were actors. Although Mickey was interested, they discouraged her from joining “the family business” and suggested she do something else. So Mickey became a nurse practitioner and volunteered to help in Vietnam, during the war. Yes, she was in the middle of the Vietnam war, but that’s another story for another day.
She then came to San Diego and worked at Kaiser Permanente, which is a hospital and insurance company. It was then that she began to look into a career in acting and theater. That’s how she met DJ Sullivan who had a great reputation as an acting coach in San Diego. It was DJ who ultimately advised her to look into working on student films to get more experience. In 1989, shortly before retiring, she volunteered to act in student films and that led her to start her own production company, LuLu Films. Mickey is a writer, a producer, a director, an actor and also had a great reputation as a casting agent. While she worked on films with filmmaking crews, including her own films, in San Diego, I reconnected with her again in late 2015. That’s when she found out about the International Mobile Film Festival, where only films shot with mobile phones qualified. She laughed. But as I explained it to her, she became more and more interested in it by the minute.
Her first film competed in IMFF 2017 and was shot with her iPhone. By the second film, Aunt Tillie’s Kitchen, she and her crew Shaun Donelson and Richard Tews, were more experienced. Her comedies are written, directed and produced by her and her company LuLu Films. She also acts as the protagonist in her short films. Comedy is not easy to do and it takes a bit of skill to pull off. However, her films have been successfully funny and they get many laughs.
Watch Aunt Tillie’s Kitchen below. You won’t find Mickey on Facebook or Twitter but you can find her on her website. Oh, and you can most likely find her being a charm in our film festivals inspiring everyone. Her motto is “If I can do it, anyone can do it.” And that is truth!
